I just changed tubes, just EH 6922s for a newer set. I had been noticing a slight edginess/roughness that propmted me to do it, female signers not sounding quite as pure as I remembered, that sort of thing. One other thing was that I had been finding that for desired balance I was going 2 extra notches on one side (dual volume controls), but with the new tubes the imbalance seems to have corrected. I'm guessing the tubes didn't wear down at the same rate.

What I find interesting about this is that it seems a diferent experience from what I've seem in the past. For example a friend with a BC9 (4x6922) seems to have lost a good bit of bass responses that was restored with new tubes, but otherwise there wasn't much difference, none of the roughness I had.

Likewise with preamps I've had in the past, it seems there's is no single sonic change that indicates worn tubes.

That strikes me as a little odd ... just wondering what others have experienced with tubes running down?

I notice just before I change my tube in my DAR that the imaging and sound staging gets kind of "flat."

The 3 dimentionality is lost, to-some-degree.
A new tube restores all the magic but seems to take a short break-in period.

No biggie!

I haven't yet tried different brands of tubes as the EH supplied
is a good "all around" performer.
(good depth across the spectrum without any exageration in the frequencies.)
